Description:

This hike starts at the Duffy Lake trailhead and goes past Duffy and Mowich Lakes before heading up a red cinder cone called Red Butte. We'll have lunch on top while enjoying the great views. On the way back a stop for a swim in Duffy Lake is a real possibility. Some of us may decide to stop at Takoda's restaurant on the way home.

Please note that permits for this trailhead will not be issued until June 26th. I'll set the maximum participants at 12 for now and adjust it if necessary.

Trip Report

There were good reasons to be pessimistic about this hike up Red Butte as we were facing a forecast of rain plus reports of late season snow and hordes of mosquitoes however the rain stopped by the time we reached the trailhead and the swarms of mosquitoes that greeted us at the start of our hike disappeared before we reached Duffy Lake. We did encounter patches of snow but it didn't stop us from reaching the summit of Red Butte and while the clouds obscured our views we were still able to catch brief glimpses of the surrounding peaks while being kept surprisingly warm by a breeze from the north. This turned out to be a great day for a hike.
