Description:

Distance: about 8 miles round trip, an out and back trip with the exact distance determined by trail conditions. There is some risk that difficult stream crossings would force us to turn around. If so, we can hike downstream on the middle fork trail toward the Constitution Grove.

Trip Report

Our group drove through some rain on the way to the Office Covered Bridge, but it was not raining at the trailhead, 30 miles up the Aufderheide Road. Because of the rainy spring we have enjoyed, the challenge of the hike was crossing the creeks that flow across the forest floor, around some of the tallest trees in the Cascades. A few prefer log-walking, while most in the group are content to wade through the water, with trekking poles for balance. A remarkable grove of red cedars is found where the North Fork Middle Fork comes out of its gorge from Waldo Lake, and makes several channels through a jumble of old logs and former channels. At this point we turned around, for a couple folks fell through fragile branches near a log bridge. Fortunately there were no injuries. After four hours we returned to the trailhead.
