Trip Report

A 7:20am departure from the McKenzie Natural Area at 42nd and Marcola made it easy for us to meet Lisa and Denise at the Deer Creek Trailhead at 9:00. They were camping at nearby Trout Creek Campground. Many thanks to Lisa who loaned me her senior parking pass. It was Saturday so we expected the trail to be busy. It was! Hikers, children, babies, and dogs —all were friendly when we met each other on the narrow summit trail. All had rave reviews about the flowers! The color of the day was orange/red with the plethora of paintbrush, scarlet gilia, and columbine. On the way back to Springfield, Selam and I stopped at House Rock Campground for a short walk over the bridge to see House Rock and the Santiam Wagon Road but the trail was closed because of hazardous conditions. We were back in Springfield at 3:30 while Buzz made it to the Albany Amtrak Station to pick up his wife Cecile at 3:20 to drive on to Portland. Meanwhile Denise and Lisa were soaking their feet in Trout Creek.
