Description:

For this outing we'll be removing the seed-heads from Canada Thistle in the Junction Meadow. We will also pick up litter and clean the trailhead.

Meet at the main Spencer Butte Trailhead parking lot, the paved lot on Willamette. Work party goes from 5:30-8 pm.

Trip Report

For this outing we returned to a project from several years ago, working to manage thistles in the Junction Meadow. Our group hiked up to the meadow and split into 2 groups. One group, Dan, Darko, Maureen, & Pat, started on the day's project cutting the flowers and seed heads off of Canada and Bull thistles. The other group, Mari, Janet, Angie, & Matt continued to the summit to enjoy the view before returning to the Junction Meadow and starting to work. Our group made quick progress. We even left the seed heads on the native thistles, the Few-Leaved Thistle, in the meadow. Thankfully, they look so different from the invasive thistles that identification is very easy even from a distance. The only Canada and Bull thistle seed heads we left were deep in the blackberries, further than we could get to. We are hopeful that our work helps to slow the spread of the invasive thistles in the Junction Meadow and allows the Few-Leaved Thistle to continue to maintain its small population there.
