Description:

To celebrate the Ogden Nash poem, Lines in Praise of a Date Made Praiseworthy Solely by Something Very Nice That Happened to It, we will stroll the many trails in Hendricks park including Oak Knoll, Native Plant Garden, Rhododendron
Garden, and if interest, Pres Rock. Meet at the F.M. Wilkins(covered) Shelter across the road from the parking lot.
Once you sign up, I will email you the poem that suggests that one pause to rejoice on his favorite day, April 12th. Not sure about mileage but perhaps 1 ½ hours? If you have time, you might find a word that rhymes with April.
Spring will hopefully be in its heyday with flowers blooming "on the twelfth of Epperell."

Trip Report

The weather abruptly changing from rain to sun made it a “thrill” to celebrate Ogden Nash’s poem, "Lines in Praise of a Date Made Praiseworthy Solely by Something Very Nice That Happened to It." After introductions some shared poems that had April rhyming words. Pat Esch wrote: I will fill a bill with a frill until I’m ill and need a pill in April.” Jorry surprised us when she ended her reading with these words: The poem I read was the response I received at website openai.com - an artificial intelligence research lab site - where I opened an account. I gave it as a request “to write me a poem in the style of Ogden Nash about April in Eugene Oregon. ” Here are few lines:
The Eugeneans don their raincoats and boots,
And brave the showers without any hoots.
For they know that April in Eugene is divine,
And the magic of the season is simply sublime.

Fortified with words, we walked faster than a snail to Oak Knoll and the Rhodie garden. Thanks to Ginny Reich who led us on a trail so we did not have retrace our steps. Thanks to Angie and Kathy who directed hikers to gather at the parking lot since the covered shelter was reserved. “Spring was certainly in its heyday with flowers blooming on the twelfth of Epperell."
