Description:

This hike follows a portion of the Alpine trail near Westfir, about 30 miles east of Eugene. The final 7 miles are on gravel roads in reasonably good condition. The trail passes through a pleasant forest, traverses several steep meadows, and crosses some damp seeps along the way. There should be some interesting wildflowers and a good view of Diamond Peak. We will climb to the top of the last and largest meadow for lunch and our turn-around point. The pace will be steady with pauses at trail intersections, and to enjoy the flowers. Notes: Mountain bikers will be sharing the trail. There are no restrooms at the trailhead.

Trip Report

It was perfect June weather for a hike to the Tire Mountain meadows. Although the exposed meadows and ridges were already very dry, there were still many nice wildflowers to enjoy including balsamroot, larkspur, rosy plectritis, cat’s ear, bluefield gilia, camas, phlox, sedum, paintbrush, starflower, queen’s cup, anemone—you get the idea. We encountered several groups of mountain bikers and needed to encourage a few to walk, rather than ride past us, because the trail is narrow without many places to step off safely. A ‘secret’ ridge-end meadow provided a shady spot for lunch. Thanks to a great group of hikers for pleasant conversation along the way, and for indulging the leader’s obsession with wildflowers.
