Description:

Meet at Jerrys on hwy 99.
Easy and short drive. We will hike along South Fork Alsea River to Alsea Falls and Green Peak Falls, and then South Fork Mile trail up to Big Fear trail.
Depending on what’s open some of us will stop on the way home in Monroe or Junction City for refreshment.

Trip Report

Despite a forecast of rain our optimistic group set out on our hike under blue skies. After observing Alsea Falls we headed across the river and made our way northwest to Green Peak Falls. Both falls were at their rain swollen best. Two hikers spotted a frustrated salmon at the base of Green Peak Falls. After visiting the falls we took a snack break at Hubert K McBee Memorial Campground under a shelter complete with an 80 foot long table made from a single Doug Fir log. On the way back we hiked up a connector trail to Big Fir Trail to complete a loop that was new to all. Surprisingly there were lots of mushrooms--Chanterelles, Golden Chanterelles and Hedgehogs. Overall it was a pleasant (if a little soggy) day and we enjoyed each other's company in the magical moist forest on a winter day.
