Description:

This is a 4 mile loop trail into the lake. We will arrive at some campsites on the lake edge which appear to be accessible by this trail or boat. This is an exploratory trip. I check the trail head parking but did not hike the trail. If there is time we will include a hike out to the beach after completing this loop. I have hiked the trails in this area. This the only time I have seen Snowy Plovers on their eggs. It is too early to enjoy at this time of the year. When we had done all we can we will stop in Old Town Florence for drinks or ice cream before heading home.

Trip Report

Great day at the coast. Sunny and cool, good hiking temperature. The four mile loop to Slitcoos Lake was beautiful. You could easily see the giant stumps from the original forest now surrounded by large second growth trees. You gain your elevation climbing over a couple of small ridges before you drop into the lake basin. Siltcoos Lake was flat. We came out at a site with 5-6 camp sites with picnic tables and fire rings. These sites are reachable by water only unless you backpack in from trailhead. We found one bathroom to service these sites. There should be a second but spent no time looking fore it. Upon returning to the cars one member returned to Eugene. The rest of us drove across 101 to the Wax Myrtle trailhead and hike the mile plus out to the beach. This makes a great combination hike. We did a little over 7 miles and we all enjoyed the day.
