Description:

Meet at the Masonic Cemetery at 25th and University near the interpretive signs and gate—not at the Abbey- then a short walk to see a few “math related” monuments and spring flowers. Then off to the University Oregon campus to Straub Hall Atrium and the Museum of Culture and History to mull over the impressive math stats for the Missoula Flood and the Willamette Meteorite sculpture in front of the museum. Optional to visit the Museum. ($4.00 seniors and $6.00 general)

Trip Report

I suggested that our math assignment for Pi Day was to find an interesting number. With our guest, it was so much fun for Pat and me to point out the famous people at the Masonic Cemetery and the Willamette Meteorite replicas at Straub Hall and the Museum of Natural and Cultural History that we almost forgot our assignment. We decided the weight of the meteorite, 15.5 tons or 34,200 pounds was the most impressive. Most monumental at the cemetery was to see the missing cast iron gate that mysteriously reappeared after thirty years and now reinstalled with the fence at the McClanhan plot. It was a beautiful day to enjoy our walk with so many spring flowers especially the fields of fawn lilies and camas at the cemetery. No time for a piece of pie.
