Trip Report

Our team of 4 started around 1:30am and made slow but steady progress. Firm conditions had us putting on our crampons just below the top of the Palmer run. From the Hogsback we opted for the safer low traverse across the Hot Rocks to gain Old Chute. At the bottom of Hot Rocks, one climber opted to turn back and wait for the team on the Hogsback. Just above Hot Rocks, the climb leader saw an ice block detach from cliffs just left of Old Chute, causing a large amount of debris to come plummetting down at the team. She yelled a warning and the team, along with a couple of other climbers in the fall zone, tried to take cover as best we could. We were hit with small debris but nothing large and only very minor injuries. Yikes! It was a close call. There were no usual indicators of above average chance of ice fall. We decided not to push our luck though and turned back for the long slog down to Timberline. Still a nice day out with a good team. A good reminder that low risk does not mean no risk and we should always remain vigilant in the mountains.
