Substitute Point

  • Start date: 07/02/2024

  • Start time: 8:00 AM

Description:

I haven't lead this hike since 2019 so I'm interested to see how the forest has recovered. An out and back trail with great views from the rocky summit. A stop at Takoda's after the hike is an option.

Trip Report

Substitute Point offers 360 degree close up views of the Three Sisters making it one of the best viewpoints in the Cascades, but first you have to get there. The 2017 Separation Fire has destroyed much of the forest going to the summit opening up the views, but exposing hikers to the sun. The last 3/4 mile to the summit has not been maintained since the fire forcing hikers to crawl over downed trees and debris. After losing the trail several times we made our way to the ridge leading to the summit by taking a direct scramble up the east side. We felt the view was worth the effort but we\'d be grateful if the trail could be cleared for future hikers.
