Scout Camp Trail

  • Start date: 07/06/2024

  • Start time: 6:45 AM

Description:

This spectacular trail starts at the top and descends to the Deschutes River, which it then parallels for about a mile before looping back up to the parking lot. Warning – there is a steep slippery 30’ gravelly stretch on the way down {take small steps and carry 1 or 2 walking sticks}; also there is one boulder along the river that looks more daunting than it is. The views, including the Sisters, the rock outcroppings & the river itself are beautiful. On the way back, we can opt to stop at Clear Lake and/or Sahalie Falls.

Trip Report

We met at McDonald\'s Thurston at 6:15am {changed from the 8am initial time to beat the heat}. The 4 of us car-pooled to the trailhead, embarking on our hike down the trail at 8:45. It was clear, beautiful and cool; the trail was steep down into the canyon, & sometimes gravelly, with many photo-ops of the Three Sisters in the distance, the rock outcroppings, and the Deschutes River far below {613\' to be exact}. Once at the bottom, we traversed downstream along the river for a mile or so, then back up the loop on the other end, finishing about 11:30. Between the early/mid-morning cooler temps and half the trail still in shadow, we did beat the heat until the very end. A beautiful outing on an under-the-radar trail. Adventurers include non-members Larry Huff, Madeline Blumm and Obsidians Paula Rich and leader Buzz Blumm. -
