Proxy Falls/Matthieu Lakes

  • Start date: 10/13/2024

  • Start time: 8:00 AM

Description:

The scenic McKenzie pass, highway 242 is one of my favorites! We'll warm up with a short beautiful Proxy Falls hike through basalt and vine maples. 1.6 RT miles. Then we'll drive up the highway to Lava Camp trailhead, to hike a 6 mile lollipop loop. This trail was closed until recently due to the fires. I'm not 100% sure of the conditions but recent reviews on All Trails says its great. After this, will drive over to Dee Wright Observatory for the incredible views of Mt. Jefferson, Washington, the Sisters and more. The total miles, about 8. A moderate pace, and a long day. We won't rush. Please arrive behind the McDonalds in Springfield by 7:50 for an 8am departure. Drivers may want to stop at Takoda's after for dinner, so if you need a ride please plan accordingly. The suggested drive contribution is $17.00. If you have any questions give me a call.

Trip Report

A classic fall day on the McKenzie Pass! Proxy Falls was our first stop, the vibrant fall foliage against the basalt was stunning. Everyone enjoyed the two waterfalls. Next we drove up to the top of the pass, parked at Lava Campground parking area and completed a 6 mile loop to the two Matthieu Lakes. This is a varied terrain which included a lot of burn area, but there was plenty of new growth and beautiful fall colors. We ate lunch by the second lake and returned to our cars. A quick stop at Dee Wright Observatory for a panoramic view of the Sisters, Mt. Jefferson, Mt. Washington and much more. All enjoyed a well deserved dinner at Takoda\'s afterwards.
