The Twins

  • Start date: 10/13/2024

  • Start time: 8:30 AM

Description:

This is my favorite hike in the Willamette National Forest - partly through the forest and then opening up. At the top, there are fantastic views of Waldo lake, the Cascades, and the somewhat unusual overview of the lakes and reservoirs to the east off Cascades Lakes Highway. The trees are starting to turn; and there some red lava rocks too! We will have lunch at the top of the north Twin and then continue making a loop before re-joining the main trail back to the parking lot. If you have access to Bill Sullivan's Central Cascades book, this trip is in there.

Please volunteer to drive if you are able to do so (column to the right after you sign up). Out of town Obsidian trips have had a dearth of drivers.

Trip Report

\"It\'s blowing in the wind\". The AQI in Oakridge the day before ranged from 168 to 36 to 100. Should I cancel or not? The next day, there was not a cloud in the sky on the drive up; the fall colors were stunning! From the top, we could see the extensive burn around Waldo Lake, Cultus Lake, Wickiup Reservoir, Davis Lake and many of the smaller lakes. We could also see a line of haze from the fires, but the Three Sisters peeked out above it. On the way home, the AQI in Oakridge was 154. It was a fabulous trip with a small group of interesting people!
