Fort Rock State Park

  • Start date: 02/22/2025

  • Start time: 7:00 AM

Description:

We’ll explore the “rock”, circumventing the outer wall, then climbing from the inner wall to the rim on the west side. Then we’ll follow the wall at ground level around from the inside, traversing past several interior rock formations. After hiking, we can get a coffee & a slice of fruit pie at the local diner. Time & energy permitting, we can opt to explore the nearby Crack in the Ground or Hole in the Ground. It’s a longer drive than usual, but this special destination is worthwhile. The weather will be partly cloudy & mid- to high-forties. Need at least 2 additional signees to make this trip. Suggested voluntary tip to drivers is $31

Trip Report

It was a beautiful day in the desert. We were greeted with a bit of snow on the ground, 3"- 4", easily managed. We circled for 1.5 miles around the outside of the "rock", then ventured inside and climbed up to the viewpoint notch on the west ridge, overlooking the desert floor some 300' below. We observed the rain clouds building from the west as we descended to the "floor" and hiked the last 1/2 mile back to the parking lot. Our group was all Obsidians, Annie Chan, Adriana Sorrell and leader Buzz Blumm.
