Tire Mountain Meadows

  • Start date: 06/04/2025

  • Start time: 8:30 AM

Description:

This hike follows a portion of the Alpine trail near Westfir, about 30 miles east of Eugene. The trail passes through a pleasant forest, traverses several steep meadows, and crosses some damp seeps. We should see nice wildflowers and have a good view of Diamond Peak. We will climb to the top of the last and largest meadow for lunch and our turn-around point (the actual summit of Tire Mtn. has no view). The pace will be steady with pauses at trail intersections and (hopefully, many) interesting flowers. Notes: Mountain bikers will be sharing the trail. The final 7 miles of driving are on gravel roads in reasonably good condition. There are no restrooms at the trailhead. In case of poor weather, the trip will be rescheduled.

Trip Report

The weather was perfect for our hike to Tire Mtn. meadows, bright and sunny, but not too hot. There was an abundance of wildflowers (we counted 57 species in bloom). Donna spotted the best patch of striped coralroot that the leader has ever seen. We were startled on a narrow upper section of trail by the roar and approach of two motorcyclists who stopped and moved their bikes aside so that we could pass them safely, and we also encountered a number of mountain bikers during the day. We enjoyed a long lunch break at the top of the largest meadow, then returned down the trail with good views of Diamond Peak and the Three Sisters along the way. A great day with a great group!
