Iron Mountain

  • Start date: 06/19/2025

  • Start time: 8:30 AM

Description:

This is the best time of the year to do this hike as the wildflowers should be at their peak. We'll start at the Tombstone Pass parking area and hike the loop that goes through the extensive meadows below Cone Peak then continue on to the summit on Iron Mt. I'll set a moderate pace so there will be plenty of time to smell the flowers. A stop at Takoda's Restaurant after the hike is a possibility.

Trip Report

This year’s annual spring pilgrimage to Iron Mountain did not disappoint, as we were rewarded with an abundance of our favorite wildflowers; however, scheduling the outing on a national holiday did mean a full parking lot and sharing the trail with other wildflower enthusiasts. Other than the crowds, the mid-June date seemed to be a great time to visit, as the weather was perfect and the flowers were near their peak. We finished the eight-mile loop that circles Iron Mountain by the early afternoon, giving some of our group plenty of time to make a stop at Takoda’s restaurant for an early dinner.<br />
