No Name Lake

  • Start date: 07/25/2025

  • Start time: 7:00 AM

Description:

This is a hike to one of Oregon's most beautiful alpine lakes, plus the hike there offers sweeping views of the Cascades and the surrounding countryside.

We'll start at the Three Creeks Lake trailhead to Tam McArthur Rim. We'll continue beyond the rim on a user-maintained trail that is in some places a bit of a scramble all the way to No-Name Lake, which is nestled in the crater of Broken Top Mt. We'll return on the same route. Because of the drive, this trip will take all day, so don't plan on getting home early. We'll be stopping in Sisters for dinner.

The permits for this trailhead will not be issued until July 6. I'll set the maximum number of participants at 12 for now and adjust it if necessary.

Note that the 7am departure time is just that, the time we will depart. If you show up late, we won't be there.

Trip Report

This is a spectacular hike, but one I often have to cancel because of too much snow, smoke, or heat. This year we were finally able to complete our hike to No Name Lake, as the snow had retreated enough to open the trail, and the clear skies enabled us to view the Cascades from Mt. Thielsen to Mt. Adams. The lake itself was still half covered with ice and icebergs, allowing some of our group to surf an iceberg. Our group of nine took 7½ hours to complete this 11½-mile hike from the Tam McArthur Rim trailhead.
