Lodge/Grounds Workday

  • Start date: 09/11/2025

  • Start time: 9:00 AM

Description:

Join a special Lodge work party, celebrating our newest Honored Member, Dave Cooper. He has tirelessly devoted many hours to the Obsidian Lodge as the committee chair, as well as working on the website and as the Trips Committee chair. The work party will focus primarily on the lodge but if enough volunteers show up, there is plenty to do on the grounds. At the end of the of the day, volunteers can enjoy some treats and raise a glass of sparkling water to honor Dave. (You might even see last year’s Honored Member, Carla Cooper assisting at the lodge.)
Chores needing done in and around the lodge are: Dust the overhead fans and beams; dust off picture frames; blow out wall heaters with canned air. Once debris are on floor level it is time to sweep, vacuum, and/ or mop. Clean the small windows in the front of the Lodge. Those same windows need touch up painting on the outside trim. Anyone feel like pressure washing the handicap parking area? Rentals pick up in the fall and potlucks will be starting. Time to have the Lodge presented at its best.

The grounds need debris cleared from the area on the west side of the lodge and placed in a common pile. The debris was created from the work of the contractor to create a more fire defensible perimeter. Limbs need to be removed from the parking area. Other areas areas may need mowing and sprucing up beds. If we are fortunate enough to have extra people, there are always things needing done. Extra points for those who work on the final blackberry removal near the storage building.

There will be something for everyone; give back to the club by joining us in maintaining our wonderful lodge and grounds!

Trip Report

A very energetic crew of 14 worked on the lodge and the grounds. Two people, new to the work parties, jumped right in and earned their pay. Of course, the wages are always of the non-material sort. Perhaps a feeling of a job well done and working for the good of the club within a supportive group? The inside of the lodge was dusted and cleaned. Bathrooms were cleaned. A kick plate was attached to the outside door, windows were cleaned and the trim on the windows was touched up. The handicapped parking area received a cleaning.

Outside, work continued on the maintenance of beds, removing debris from the defensible space and vegetation close to the building.

Dave Cooper, our newest Honored Member, was feted with chocolate zucinni bread (made and donated by Janet Jacobsen), pears and sparkling water. A list of all Lodge Committee chairs was compiled by Bea and Janet and presented to Dave. An interesting statistic - between Doug Nelson and Dave, they have been the Lodge chair 25% of the years since the opening of the lodge.

Once again, the volunteerism in this group is awe inspiring. It is what makes this group work!
