Trip Report

What a fabulous three days with an interesting group of Obsidians! Check out the pictures in the gallery!
Friday: we met at Cooper Creek Reservoir (Sutherlin) at 9:30am for a 5.8 mile hike under sunny skies. Much to our surprise, there was quite an assortment of wildflowers - hound’s tongue, calypso orchids, shooting stars, trilliums, fawn lilies, violets, Hooker fairy bells, several types of white flowers and flowering currant bushes. The numerous dogwood trees with giant white petals stole the show. The drive to Union Creek “Resort” took 2.5 hours, in part due to a short, but intense lightning storm with a deluge. Dinner was shrimp scampi, pasta primavera with either white sauce or pesto, spinach salad, and a scrumptious chocolate cake.
Saturday: we stayed in two separate houses and left at 9:30am to drive the half hour to Crater Lake. Six Obsidians snowshoed from the parking lot clockwise to the second overlook, enjoying clear skies and great views of the lake and Wizard Island while eating lunch. Four snowshoers barely saw the lake, almost invisible under low clouds and then joined Ranger Corey on a tour; they learned about the history, ecology, and geology of the area and also observed human penguins (other tour participants) sliding down a slope face first! Three Obsidians skied five miles on the East Rim Road starting at the visitor center. No views, but decent snow. The weather was a medley of different conditions: very low clouds, snow flurries, tiny hail (graupel), clear skies, and a blizzard which dumped at least an inch in about 30 minutes! Dinner prepared and served by participants in the other house was delicious: lasagne rolls, yummy spring soup, tossed salad, and muffins and cookies.
Sunday: After breakfast, everyone meandered across the street to view the Rogue River Gorge, a short trail with incredibly close views of the constrained river rushing through a narrow lava channel. Some folks hiked further downriver enjoying the views as the river widened out. Most of us drove straight home thereafter, but two Obsidians hiked the 5 mile round trip Boundary Springs trail through a burn area to see the headwaters of the Rogue River.
