Fish Lake Kayak/Canoe
-
Start date: 05/15/2026
-
Start time: 9:00 AM
Description:
Fish Lake in the Willamette National Forest is less than 2 miles before the intersection of highways 126 and 20. It's an ephemeral lake which becomes a lush meadow by late June because the water drains underground. We'll explore little coves and paddle the circumference of the lake which will take about 1.5 hours. We'll also stop and wander around the former relay station.
The "relay station" at Fish Lake in Oregon refers to the Fish Lake Remount Depot, a historic site and a location for overnight stays in the winter. It was once a stop for travelers on the Santiam Wagon Road and later, a field and dispatch headquarters for the Santiam National Forest. See: http://www.fishlakehistoricsite.org/p/history.html Suggested donation to the drivers is at least $15.
No inflatable kayaks; this is flat water and it could be windy.
It could be chilly; bring extra clothes. Our feet could get wet getting into the boats; wear appropriate foot gear.
