Coast Hike & Heceta Lighthouse

  • Start date: 06/30/2026

  • Start time: 9:00 AM

Description:

This is a hike south along the beach from Carl Washburne to the Hobbit Trail, then over Heceta Head to the lighthouse. We will spend about an hour and a half at the lighthouse and Cape Creek area. We return over Heceta Head, crossing Hwy 1, then exploring the China Creek Trail. We will walk through the campground to the B-40 Trail and back along the beach returning to the Day Use parking area.

We will be hiking on the beach several hours after a minus low tide, to get around Blowout Creek. (Low tide is -1 foot at 07:38 AM; High tide is at 2:30pm).
I led this hike several years ago and there was lots of mud and slick areas on the Heceta Head Trail. Be prepared for mud!
At the Target parking lot, park closer to the main entrance on the north side.

Schedule:
09:00: We depart the Target parking lot. We will make a quick 10-minute rest stop along the way.
10:40: Arrive at Carl Washburne Day Use area parking lot. If you live on the coast and are joining the hike, meet us at the this time and location.
10:40-3:30-ish: Hike along the beach, the Hobbit Trail, the Heceta Head Trail to the Heceta Head Lighthouse. We will eat sometime about 12:30 on the trail.
Driving Back: The plan is to be on the road between 3 and 4pm. We will make a stop at Fred Meyer's in Florence, for about 20 minutes to grab a snack, make a restroom stop, etc.
5:30-ish: Returning to the Target parking lot, no later than 6pm.
