Italy is a rock climber’s paradise, with spectacular mountains and plenty of ways to explore them—and, of course, it’s also a paradise for pasta-loving, pizza-eating, gelato fans!

Our own Maryanne Reiter traveled to Italy in 2022 and 2024 to climb in the Dolomites and on the island of Sardinia. In the Dolomites, she discovered via ferrata (“iron paths”), where climbers clip into cables along dramatic rock faces. Originally established during World War I to help soldiers travel through the mountains, these routes were later upgraded by the Italian Alpine Club for recreational use.

In Sardinia, she and her group sailed along the northeast coast, stopping to climb the seaside cliffs, sleeping on the boat, and sailing on to their next climbing destination. And wherever they went, they made sure to conduct a detailed survey of the local gelato flavors!

Supplies and Equipment Required: Bring a potluck dish to share (a main dish, casserole, salad, bread, dessert), but please DO NOT bring serving utensils. DO bring your own personal plate, eating utensils and cup or mug - all of which you will take home to wash. You may bring a non-alcoholic beverage. Decaf coffee, tea and hot chocolate will be provided. - We have a section for Vegetarian Main dishes. We also provide labels to indicate vegan dishes or those with food-related allergies. Please use the labels or bring your own small label of ingredients. Since salads may or may not contain meat, please label yours if it does.
participant prerequisites: You do not need to be an Obsidians member to attend. No sign-up is necessary to attend Potlucks & Presentations. If you want to attend only the presentation, please arrive at the Obsidians Lodge just before 7:30 PM.
