  • Start time: 7:00 AM

  • End date: 09/21/2026

  • End time: 7:00 PM

Description:

Adventure Scientists is collaborating with the USFS research lab in Corvallis to gather acoustic data in old growth forests in the Cascades of Oregon, Washington, and California. large-scale project that includes the Willamette, Umpqua, Deschutes, Fremont-Winema, and Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forests, all within range of Eugene. The acoustic data will be used to understand distribution of 40 species within the PNW old growth areas in order to update conservation efforts and modify the forest management plans accordingly. The first year of the project is wrapping up and there are many acoustic recording units (ARU) that need to be retrieved by the end of September. Currently there are 8 areas in easy reach of Eugene that need to have the ARU retrieved. Darko and I have completed the volunteer training and other requirements and are now ready to head out to one of the areas (a 'hex' shaped area) and retrieve the 4 ARU in it.

For this trip we will travel to the southwest flank of Substitution Point in the 3 Sisters Wilderness. This area is accessed by the Foley Ridge trail (about 3.5-4 miles, about 1500' eleven gain) then off-trail through a large burn area that likely will feature a fair amount of climbing over, going under, and around down trees.

Please sign and help us with this project. There is a lot of potential for collaboration on large-scale science projects through the Adventure Scientists organization. Optimally, all participants on this trip will be volunteers for Adventure Scientists, but the process of joining takes a couple of days and time is very short to get through the process. You can still come with us and help, but will not have access to any of the data required to find the ARU. A link to the project page with the option to join is below:

More info will be sent to participants in the next few days (weather will be beautiful!).
