Trip Report

The weather smiled all the way for the trip with clear skies and sunshine. A full Trailways bus left promptly at 7:00 a.m. from South Eugene parking lot. Coffee and donuts were relished at the rest stop south of Portland. Imagine a picnic lunch on the bank of the Columbia River and no wind and with Stonehenge Monuments above and Maryhill nearby to add to the atmosphere.

Arrival at the Museum was at 1:30 p.m. The palatial castle is now called "Museum of Fine Arts". It is not the same old place which first opened to the public in 1940. The new director, Mr. Robert Campbell, recently announced Maryhill's acceptance for the National Register of Historic Places, and expects exterior restoration by Portland architects, Allen-McMath-Hawkins to start this summer. There are even landscape plans based on the originals that call for formal garden and paths, giving a view of the Columbia - including restoration of the peach orchard and vinyards.

There was much to see and the two hour conducted tour went all too fast. Queen Marie's gifts of her personal possessions were gathered into a single gallery.

There were Cypriot Pots and Tanagra figures given by Queen Elizabeth of Greece.

Indian baskets have been selected from thousands for the octagonal gallery. Doris Bound's Indian Costumes including Chief Joseph's jacket were with other artifacts.

The thousands of objects are being recatalogued and there were apparent signs of work and rejuvenation started for the 1975 season.

Enroute home a stop at the "Fruit Tree" in Hood River for cider and shopping was a "must".

Supper at Ramada Inn and home by 9:20 p.m. and met by Ray Cavagnaro.
