Trip Report

We all met at the McManigals' cabin in Sisters, Friday night. The next morning we slept in until 8:00 a.m., had a nice breakfast, that my mother cooked for the five of us going on the climb, and got to trail head by 9:00 a.m. Rick McManigal was the leader, but since he had a job in Crater Lake, his little brother ended up substituting for the climb. The weather was bad when we started, and got worse when we gained altitude. As we arrived at the red knoll at the top of the ridge it really started to rain. When we got to the base of the pinnacle the wind picked up too. I then climbed to the top of the chimney and then belayed everybody up. It was then that the rain stopped. We climbed to the summit and ate lunch in the fog. It was so foggy, that you could not see ten feet, but we did dry off some. We spent 30 minutes at the top and started down. When we got to the top of the chimney the wind blew and the rain fell out of the sky. Rappelling down the chimney, we all got very cold and wet. By the time I went down last the wind was blowing about 60 mph and it was raining but it was not too bad. When I got down I could not pull ropes down so I climbed up the chimney again, got the ropes down, and climbed back down without the aid of the rope. We all then hiked out to the car and drove home.
