Trip Report

We arrived at the crowded Summit Lake campground Saturday evening and slept out under beautiful starry skies. It was over cast when we started the trip via the excellent Crater Butte trail (#44) from Summit Lake. After 3½ miles on the trail we took off cross-country toward the mountain crossing the new Pacific Crest trail. Soon we were on the rocky south ridge encountering patches of snow enroute to the false summit. From here we traversed along the ridge and over a snowfield to the true summit. The skies were clear by now and we shared marvelous views of the cascades from Jefferson to Thielsen with several chipmunks. We looked down into a snow-covered cirque with a little frozen lake. After an hour on the summit, we descended via the same route and were back at the cars after a 7 hour round trip, while viewing some flowers, mushrooms and small huckleberries. Those of you who missed this climb missed a delightful experience.
