Trip Report

We all met at South Eugene parking lot, 6:30 Friday evening, and drove up to Frog Camp and hiked in from there to White Branch. We all arrived at 10:30 p.m., after hiking in the dark three miles. Got up at 5:00 a.m., cooked breakfast, and started at 6:10 a.m. At Sunshine Shelter, Velma Shirk decided to hike the loop instead. Arrived on top of the ridge at 9 a.m. with no trouble. Then went to dinner, where we had to cross about 18 feet of very hard ice, all that was left of the snow field. After I chopped the steps in the ice, all of the party got across with little trouble. Went up chute and were on top at 12 noon, just in time for a big lunch, and a quart of grape juice. Started down at 1:30 p.m. and waited for a party of nine from Whitman College. They could use a lesson in mountain etiquette. Hiked down ridge in 60 seconds and off ridge in 30 seconds and were on the glacier in good time. Hiked to White Branch, got all of our gear and hiked out in 40 minutes from White Branch. Got in the cars and drove home. In adding the time, the climb took 26 hours, from leaving to arriving home. A good party.
