Trip Report

Parker's feet were hurting from prior surgery so lead was turned over to capable hands of Wayne Hatch. We went up the cliff and camped at Lake Arrowhead above Sunshine on Saturday. Up Sunday at five and on our way at six. Donna decided to stay at base camp and explore the meadows and falls. Climb went well under warm, clear skies. The horizon was very hazy with a thick layer of smog. Two hand lines were needed on steep snow field above the saddle. Seventeen climbers made the summit including seven "first timers" ever on a major peak. Celebrating eight years of climbing together (beginning with Pat Crowder's lead of the Middle Sister) were Lee Hatch, Dorothy Leland, Velma Shirk and Parker Riddle. We went up Collier, and a11 the way down Renfrew on the seat of our pants. No major injuries, but lots of sore feet and blisters on the way out. A side comment: It was apparent that Sunshine Meadows is not getting the heavy camping traffic that it used to five to eight years ago. Also, be sure and have your wilderness permits. We were checked for ours after dark. Fine climb, nice group. Besides Donna Ferchland, who did not climb, and the four mentioned above there were Angie Barta, Dan Chamness, Kathleen Hall, Theresa Hockett, Kathy Larson, Beverly, Lloyd and Mike Lindley, Kathy Stroh, Emilie Thompson, Nancy White, Sharon Wilson and leader Wayne Hatch.
