Trip Report

Our party of six left the parking lot at 1:20 p.m. Saturday and arrived at Devil's Lake Forest Camp at 4:00 p.m. We took the long, gradual trail to Moraine Lake and had very good views of the mountain and terrain, arriving at the Lake at 6:15 p.m. There were many campers ahead of us, many of whom had illegal campfires. We found a good campground north of the Lake. High thin clouds and a bright moon kept us from seeing many of the meteorites. We were up at 5:00 a.m. and on the move at 5:30 a.m. We made good time in pleasant weather and the last of the party made the summit at 10:00 a.m. After enjoying the view and filling our bottles from the crater lake, we started down at 11:40. We met many climbers on the way up, many of them ill-prepared and without water. Two joggers passed us on the way up, and soon passed us going down. One had made the summit from Sparks Lake in two hours. Many messages passed between parties about two lost dogs, both of whom were found. The last of us arrived back at camp at 1:30 p.m., and after a refreshing swim, started out at 2:50 p.m. We took the short, steep trail back, arriving at the cars at 4:20 p.m. All arrived back at Eugene by 7:15 p.m. Our social & climbing group, all of whom reached the summit, consisted of Dan Bates, Linda Carnine, Richard Eden, Henrietta Richmond, Rod Vanderwall, & leader Joel McClure.
