Trip Report

We left Eugene Friday about 3:30 p.m., drove over the Willamette Pass to Cascade Lakes Highway and to Devil's Lake, then backpacked across Wickiup Plains to Mesa Creek Meadow, where we made camp. Saturday we left camp at 7:20. Hiked to Husband Lake, then climbed the Husband. On the way down, Bob decided to hike to Ilene Lake and the rest of the party went down to Separation Meadows, Indian Holes, and 12 miles west, back the James Creek Trail, going by James Creek Shelter and to camp. Six elk were seen along the way. Bob, after leaving Ilene Lake, hiked up near Chambers Lakes before returning to Camp.

On Sunday, after a leisurely breakfast we stashed our packs on the north edge of Wickiup Plains and climbed the Wife, followed the Ridge to the Sphinx, then down to Mesa Creek and back up to the packs and out. The view from all of these points is fantastic, but my favorite is the Sphinx. It overlooks some of the most rugged country in our wilderness - with Separation, Hinton, James and Mesa Creeks and innumerable springs pouring ice cold water down beautiful canyons and through pristine meadows.

On this trip were: Robert Foster, Wayne Hatch, Steve McManigal, Kevin Riddle, and Frank Moore, leader.
