Trip Report

TREES, OCEAN BREEZES AND TILLAMOOK CHEESE: We left South Eugene Parking lot at 8:00 a.m. on a rare beautiful sunny day. Drove north by way of Coburg and Peoria to Corvallis, and on to Valley Junction. Stopped for lunch at Castle Rock rest area. A beautiful place with a river flowing past. Continue on north to Hebo and stopped about eight miles south of Tillamook to turn off for Munson Falls. Hiked about a half mile up a slope and suddenly there were the falls - very beautiful, but very little sound, nor roar that most falls make. Returned to the main highway and then saw the sign: "No trucks or buses permitted beyond this point!"

We reached Tillamook about 3:00 p.m. and checked into our motel. Most of us visited the County Museum (a very good one): lots of Indian artifacts, pioneer pictures, etc., and upstairs a fine display of birds and small animals. Had dinner at Hadley House.

The next morning visited the Tillamook Cheese Factory. Once there were 27 factories. Now only one large one, completely mechanized, with refrigerated trucks to collect the milk throughout the country. Went to Cape Meares where we viewed the octopus tree, met two couples and learned that they were Mazamans. Birds were migrating on the off-shore rocks and we saw the interesting "tufted puffins." We went on to Cape Lookout for our lunch stop. Wound along the coast through Otis Junction to Highway 99 West. Stopped at Helmick State Park for rest stop. Arrived in Eugene at 6:00 p.m. The trip was led by Mary Mallery, Virginia West and Betty Stamm.

Enjoying trees, breeze and cheese were Duke and Mary Lou Arpin, Muriel Aufterheide, Louise Barnes, Ella Carrick, Marie Carstenson, Sophie Christopher, Nellie Cline, Ella Douda, Bette Hack, Jane Hilt, Enid Leady, Karen Lorets, Mary Mallory, Jean Maxwell, Nellie and R.O. McWilliams, Elwina Meacham, Ola Merrill, Frances Newsom, Ruth Nichols, Alma Potter, Grace Smith, Betty Mae Stamm, Mary-Douglass Stovall, Helen Weiser, and Ruth Williams.
