Trip Report

We were up at 3 a.m. and on our way from Timberline Lodge at 4 a.m. under a moonless sky. A continuous string of flashlights visible all the way to the summit. Hundreds - maybe thousands - of climbers were on the mountain due to graduation climbs and substituting Mt. Hood for St. Helens. Attached crampons at the Hogs Back and waited in line to climb. We eventually reached the summit at 1 p.m., only to be met by two shockers: l) the large number of people relaxing in the sunny but windy environment; and 2) the gigantic plume of smoke coming from Mt. St. Helens, a result of the immense eruption which occurred 90 minutes earlier.

There was another long wait to get down the chute and onto the Hogs Back. Many long and fast sitting glissades on the way down the mountain put us back at Timberline Lodge at 2 p.m. for a well deserved rest. There were good climbing conditions on semi-hard snow with four great people, who did an outstanding job on their first mountain.

Climbers were Lynn Baker, Duane Krogh, Peggy Lindahl, Eve Lunnquist, Bud Proctor (leader).
