Trip Report

Despite the steady rain and the small group, we decided to chance the weather and proceed with the scheduled climb of Broken Top and South Sister.

After driving to Sparks Lake on the now all-paved Cascade Lakes Highway we headed for our intended campsite at 7200 feet on the west side of the mt. Arriving there at 2:30, we found the whole area covered with deep snow, but we found good tent spots in the trees. We headed for the summit at 3:30 under cloudy skies with the mountain hidden in the fog.

When we arrived on the summit at 6:30 the sky was clear and the wind calm, with good views of the Sisters and Jefferson. After a calm and clear night we awoke to sleet clouds and rain, so we decided that some other time would be better to climb South Sister and packed out.

Climbers included Bert Ewing, Lee Hatch (leader), Mark Perrin, Charlotte Scherer and Richard Scherer and Cecelia Lom Ping Leung. Kim Ping was a first time climber, first time backpacker and a visitor from Hong Ko.
