Trip Report

Left Summit Lake campsite at 5:00 a.m. and headed up the southeast ridge. Calm, clear weather put us easily on top by noon. Unfortunately, with a group this size, each person got only a few minutes on the summit (except the belayers). On the descent, Dick Hildreth decided he didn't like the view from the crawl, and took a leap towards eastern Oregon - fixed ropes are nice to have! Arrived at camp in time to avoid an afternoon lightning storm, then stopped at McKenzie Bridge for milkshakes on the way home. Summit climbers were Becky, John, Mary, and Ruth Bascom, Tim Cook, Jack Ewing, Lee Hatch, Dick Hildreth, Judy Shirk, Tony Smith, and leader Bert Ewing. Velma Shirk and Herb Dimmock went to the base of the pinnacle. (Special congrats to Herb from Maryland where the highest mountain is 3360 feet.) And, oh, yes - Tim got a scratch on his new hard hat!
