Description:

We'll park at Koosah Falls and head south to Carmen Reservoir, cross the McKenzie river, and pass Koosah and Sahalie on their north sides. Then we'll cross back over the river and take the trail to Clear Lake. The bridge at the north end of Clear Lake is out, so instead of circling the lake, we'll hike the east* side only as an out-and-back, then return past Sahalie and Koosah on their south sides and back to our cars.

* East side is the side with the lava, not the side with the resort. It's the best side anyway.

Last year it poured rain on us when we did this hike at the end of October, and we had a great time! So come prepared for the weather, and remember - there is no such thing as bad weather, only the wrong clothes.

Some of us may stop at Takodas on the way home, so be sure to discuss this ahead of time with your driver.

Trip Report

Soooo glad we didn't cancel this trip because of the weather! True, it drizzled for much of the time we were on the trail, but we also got a rainbow at the start of our trip, beautiful fall foliage and a cozy lunch break in front of the fireplace at the lodge. And the new bridge at the north end of the lake is officially open so we could hike all the way around the lake without backtracking. The new bridge is a treat to walk on - it's so new that we could smell the fresh wood when we crossed.

We started at Koosah Falls and hiked down the river to the reservoir, where we crossed over and were led astray by our leader, who managed to miss the trailhead. We bushwacked around for about quarter mile before we continued on up the east bank past the waterfalls and on to Clear Lake.

This is a classic fall hike for all ability levels - there are several points where people can peel off to make a shorter loop and two of our party chose to just make the waterfall loop (3 miles) while the rest of us went on the Clear Lake for the full circuit.
