Trip Report

Peregrine Traverse on Acker Rock was a first for the Obsidians. It is 9 pitches of good rock on the South Umpqua River. The route ends at the fire lookout and then you hike out from there. The adventurous and tired team from the Mount Hubris climb drove from Northern California to the Boulder Creek campground near Acker Rock Saturday night. We got a few precious hours of sleep and headed up to the climb. Kana and Kellie chose not to climb, but hiked in with us and gave us encouragement. Team one was Maryanne Reiter and Hayden Banks while team two was Danni Harris and Meg McNabb. The climb was fun and wandering, like playing chutes and ladders since at times you had to down climb or rappel to get to the next pitch. I was rappelling down to start the last pitch and had thrown the rope on the ledge I needed to get to, but when I looked down again as I was a few above where the rope landed I saw an angry cloud of bees! I had thrown the rope onto a ground nest. In a split second I was back up to where I started, climbing up what I had just rapped down. We decided to forego the last pitch and rappel off away from the bees.
