Trip Report

Forty-two people, including only 12 Obsidians, sailed for Alaska on May 17, on the SS Universe, from Vancouver, BC. We enjoyed almost perfect weather and calm seas as far as Wrangell, Juneau, Skagway and on into Glacier Bay with bright sunshine most of the way. As we sailed past the Columbia Glacier on our way to Whittier, there were huge blue-green icebergs floating all around us. The ship fended off the one closest to it for fear of damaging the propellor. From Whittier we went by train and bus through two long tunnels into Anchorage for the day. Stops on the way back were in historic Sitka, Ketchikan and Victoria; we landed in Vancouver again on May 31st. The trip home was made most exciting by a very large storm with waves to 25 feet, and winds upwards of fifty knots. Most people weathered the storm very well, while others took to their cabins for the duration. Obsidians among the travelers were Barbara Elsen, John and Dallas Cole, Clair Cooley, Lois Schreiner, Euphemea Culp, Jane Hilt, Ruth Keen; Dee Kelley, Lila Smith, and Ewart and Margaret Baldwin (leaders).
