Trip Report

Our expedition to Alturas and the Lava Beds stopped at Fort Rock, where we sampled refreshments by our great committee. We ate lunch at the Summer Lake byway, then went through Lakeview. Finding no rest facilities, we stopped at the shore of Goose Lake. Upon entering California we soon turned up Fandango Valley to the pass and on to Fort Bidwell in Surprise Valley, a down-faulted block east of the Warner Range. We stopped briefly in Cedarville before reaching Alturas, where we spent the first night.

We stopped for groceries on our way out of town on our way to the Lava Beds. There is a new H.Q. which we took advantage of, viewing their show and borrowing flashlights to go to the Valentine Cave. Some stayed at headquarters but most walked part way into the lava tube. From there we went by Canby's Cross to Captain Jack's Stronghold where most did a short hike, and we lunched beneath the junipers before departing. We visited the Bird Refuge H.Q. where we saw their show, then it was on to Tule Lake to the new museum which features human history including the World War II Japanese internment camp, the coming of a large colony of Czechoslovakians in the Malin area, as well as farm machinery in the yard. We had an excellent guide at this museum.

We spent the night in Klamath Falls and the next morning crossed the Green Spring summit to the Bear Creek Valley. We stopped briefly at the Valley of the Rogue rest stop with more refreshments. Indian Mary County Park, just west of Hell's Gate on the Rogue River, was where we had lunch. We stopped at the Applegate Trail Museum in Sunny Valley... and then we came home. The weather was ideal.
