Amanda’s Trail & Oregon Coast Trail

  • Start date: 01/12/2025

  • Start time: 7:30 AM

Description:

Description: Begin the hike at the south end of Ocean Drive in Yachats. The first 1.1 mile of the trail to the Amanda statue is moderate. It then rises steeply in spots for the next 1.9 miles to a stone shelter, our turn-around. Some of the footing is difficult, with roots, etc. but not dangerous. There are several interesting features along this trail, and fine viewpoints of the ocean & coastline. The pace will be slow to moderate; expect to be 4-5 hours on the trail. The day is forecast to be mostly sunny & high of 48. We should have time after hiking for coffee in Yachats & sight-seeing along the coast.

Trip Report

An unusual trail with many fine views and significant features along the way. The first ½ mile was through the south end of Yachats, then up into the forest to a beautiful and serene amphitheater featuring a memorial and statue of a Native American lady, Amanda, elderly and blind – in 1864 she was forcibly marched by the US Cavalry from her “white” family at Cape Perpetua to the current site of Yachats, an Oregon version of the “trail of tears”. From the memorial, the trail continued over an impressive suspension bridge, then steeply up and across to a 90 year-old stone shelter {built by the CCC in the 1930’s} overlooking Cape Perpetua and the Pacific Coast to the south. We then descended directly to the access road to the Perpetua visitors center and looped back to the trailhead at Yachats. Just two of use – Non-Obsidian Jan Danforth and leader Buzz Blumm.
