Description:

A small stream that might have gotten its name when it used to spread out over a large area of the flat lands during flood stage. We will walk north on the new trail and bridges along Amazon Trail eventually to 18th Street where we will search where the creek appears and disappears, turning around at the fairgrounds. Perhaps lunch downtown —catch Bus 28 back to Martin Street. If you don’t have a bus pass, I’ll help you with that at the EMX bus station downtown. If you want a longer hike, consider hiking the Amazon Headwater Trail before we start or walk back to Martin Street.

Trip Report

We met at Martin Street Trailhead where Amazon Creek leaves its forested natural setting and is then channelized through town. The twenty-six acres of the Amazon Headwaters contain three major streams feeding into Amazon Creek. A 1935 aerial photo showed the swampy area where Amazon Creek would spread out during flood stages perhaps like its namesake. Since then Eugene has cleaned up the swamp. Following the channeled Amazon Creek, we walked on the new Amazon Trail taking time to check out the new pedestrian bridges and the small creek in Tugman Park. When we reached 16th and Willamette, we said good-by to Amazon Creek and crossed over to Newman's Fish Market for lunch. I was able to quickly renew by Honored Guest Pass before we boarded Bus #28 at 12:30 to head back to Martin Street.
