Trip Report

We headed off from Amazon Park on a beautiful summer morning, taking off jackets in anticipation of our first short climb up 28th. After crossing Laurelwood Golf Course, we headed into the woods to connect with the Ribbon Trail. We were stopped as we approached a recent large clearing, where the trail ended because construction has started on a new housing development. No one was working on the site, but there was a massive earth moving machine which had begun to clear a large section of forest for the new extension of Spring Blvd, from 30th. We were all appalled at the scale of the damage. Another hiker approached, a local architect who filled us in on the progress of development. Leaving the destruction behind, we continued on the Ribbon Trail heading north to Hendricks Park. We descended on Fairmount Heights, which has some good views of west Eugene from the top. Then to 21st and taking a lovely alley back to Alder, then on to starting point. We all headed to the top of one of the parking decks near the Sacred Heart Hospital and watched the fly-over of jets commemorating Memorial Day and health care workers, a few who also came out to watch with the small crowd.
