Description:

We will tour this conservation easement off Lorane Highway with landowners Linda and Doug Carnine. The Carnine’s along with Joe Moll of the McKenzie River Trust will be presenting at the ExploraTalk at the Lodge on Tuesday, April 18. This hike affords the group the opportunity to see first-hand protected acres of oak savannah in the Long Tom River watershed and many species of wildlife native to the Willamette Valley: native birds, elk, deer, Western gray squirrel, and more.
We will be hiking a loop or two and up a hill top. It might be muddy, so wear appropriate boots. We plan to be back in town at approximately 1 pm.

Investing In Conservation in Our Own Backyard: A Conversation with the Carnine’s

Linda Carnine along with Joe Moll of the McKenzie River Trust will be telling us about how they worked to protect a 294-acre property a few miles from Eugene. The Carnine’s purchased a cut-over parcel of land along Lorane Highway with a vision to turn it into thriving forests that clean the air and provide homes for native hawks, bees, cougars, rattlesnakes and bears. The McKenzie River Trust, the Long Tom Watershed Council, the US Fish and Wildlife Service, National Resource Conservation Service and Oregon Department of Forestry have worked with the Carnine’s to improve habitat conditions and ensure the conservation of the property in perpetuity. A hiking tour on trails on their managed land will follow on Thursday, in which participants will observe wildlife habitat and native plants.

Trip Report

The group met landowner Linda Carnine along with McKenzie River Trust (MRT) staff-person Elizabeth Goward at the preserve at 84731 Lorane Highway. Linda and husband Doug bought this property to enhance the wildlife corridor between nearby farms, creating a conservation easement with the the help of the MRT and local agencies. By removing Douglas firs and Scotch broom, they are attempting to restore the area to a pre-European oak savanna with scattered white and black oaks, valley pines, and madrones, along with adequate amounts of poison oak. We hiked 2.5 miles and the spring wildflowers seen included hound’s tongue, spring beauty, calypso orchid, Oregon iris, and shooting star. Bird species seen or heard included red-tailed hawk, Cooper’s hawk, white-crowned sparrow, black-throated gray and and orange-crowned warblers, wrentit, and purple finch. The Carnine’s welcome visitors but they would like a call before your visit. Read more about the property at http://www.mckenzieriver.org/2015/12/its-the-trees/
