Aufderheide Road from Westfir

  • Start date: 10/13/2018

  • Start time: 12:00 AM

  • End date: 10/13/2018

  • End time: 11:59 PM

Description:

We will carpool up to Westfir, and then ride Aufderheide Drive as it gently rises to Kiahanie Campground, enjoying the fall colors. We'll make a lunch stop at Kiahanie Campground, and then relax for an easy descent back to the cars. (If the weather is nice and riders are strong, we could ride all the way to Box Canyon--but this involves another 10 miles with significant climbing, so this is strictly optional)

The number of people who can go will depend upon the number of bikes the cars can carry--so anyone who has a car with a bike rack, please offer to drive!

If smoke from the Terwilliger or other fires is a problem, the trip will be cancelled

Trip Report

Despite leaving Eugene a bit later than usual to give the sun a headstart on warming things up, it was still pretty chilly as our group of five unloaded bikes in Westfir and started riding up Aufderheide Drive. But the beautiful fall colors, the river babbling over rapids and the fern-filled forest--as well as a pleasant stop to bask in the sun on a bridge--kept us happy, and soon the road climbed just enough to warm us up. We arrived at Kiahanie Campground, and searched out the only campsite that had a lot of warm sunshine for our lunch break. After chatting with a camper, and deciding we were glad to be riding along the river rather than standing in it, we headed back for an easy descent back down to the cars. Fall colors, clear blue skies and good company made this a great way to enjoy an October day.
