Trip Report

Seven of us left the Target store on West 11th around 8 AM. We drove out of town with overcast skies and some fog. Made a short stop at Fred Meyers in Florence then regrouped at the Sea Lion Caves parking lot, where we left the fog behind us, and the sun was shining bright. From there we caravaned on to the Heceta Head Lighthouse parking lot. We started hiking up the wide gravel trail, stopping first to look at the Heceta Lighthouse Bed & Breakfast before arriving at the lighthouse. We took a few moments to enjoy the working lighthouse up close and great views of the ocean. To the right of the lighthouse, we picked up the trail. This trail climbs above the lighthouse through an old spruce forest with rhododendrens. After reaching the summit, we had great views of the beach we would walk on later. Checking the wind, we determined to hike the loop counterclockwise so the wind would be at our backs during the beach hike. After reaching the Hobbit Trail junction we crossed Hwy 101 and continued on the Valley Trail to Washburne State Park, crossing 101 again into the day use area, stopping at the restrooms. Moved on to the beach with a slight breeze to our backs. We found a little cove for a lunch break out of the wind. After lunch we continued south to the Hobbit Trail. We took this trail to the Heceta Lighthouse trail which took us back to our cars. Mid-October on the Oregon beach with friends, sunny skies, and very little wind makes for a fabulous day.
