Description:

This is a nice, longer snowshoe out of Gold Lake Sno-Park. ***DUE TO ABOUT 7 FEET OF SNOW AT CASCADE SUMMIT SNO-TEL AND REPORTS OF DIFFICULTY GOING MORE THAN A MILE AT THE START OF THE ROUTE YESTERDAY, IT IS POSSIBLE THERE WILL BE A ROUTE CHANGE, MAYBE ONLY AS FAR AS BECHTEL SHELTER, MAYBE NORTH OF 58. THERE WILL BE MORE SNOW, FOLLOWED BY DRY CONDITIONS FOR ABOUT THE 42 HOURS PRIOR TO THE TRIP. STAY TUNED.

It is just over 2 miles to Bechtel Shelter via Marianne Trail (far west loop), then to Pengra Pass Road and cut off and enter the Diamond Peak Wilderness for the mile trip to Midnight Lake. After that, we will backtrack a little and then take the PCT to Odell Overlook for lunch. We will return by way of Diamond View (which it no longer is) and then a long downhill back to Abernethy Road and the Parking Lot.

Trip Report

None of us was sure what we would find for snow conditions at Gold Lake, but after the weekend, we hoped there would be decent tracks, and we were right. We headed towards Bechtel Shelter, which had far more snow in front of it than it had 2 weeks earlier. when I had gone through it Then we reached the road and found the trail to Midnight Lake. We had good tracks all the way to the lake and had lunch there,. It was cloudy by then, but the temperature was well above freezing. We then went north on the PCT all the way to Odell Overlook, running into three Obsidians out on the trail and a few others at the overlook. We then went up to Diamond View and finished with the CJ Trail. Other than a few snow bombs, the hike was uneventful.

I'm looking at another trip as far as Arrowhead Lake, another mile further south on the PCT.
