Description:

I was able to get six additional hiking permits for a total of 12. This will be the first day that the old McKenzie Pass is open. We should have a great hike. We will explore the trail to little Belknap crater and big Belknap crater.

Trip Report

While the weather was 95 degrees in the valley we had a cool 80 degrees with a lovely cool wind sweeping over the snow fields. Most of the trail was clear of snow but we did have to navigate a few snow fields. The group ate lunch at the base of Belknap Crater while several scouted the trail past the snow fields to hike to the top of the large crater. Steep uphill on scree and snow fields made it rough going but six made it to the top. What a view. We could see Mt Washington, Three Fingered Jack and Mt Jefferson. We always had the beautiful Three sisters in our view. We did the little Belknap Crater side trail on the way back down. Tough going with the pumice trail but what an awesome hike on a oerfect day with a perfect group.
