Description:

Two lovely lakes with great views and reflections of 3 Fingered Jack, some fall colors around the lakes this time of year. We will start at the Santiam Pass and hike 1.2 miles north on the PCT, then pick up the Santiam Lks trail for several miles. There is a user trail off the Santiam lks trail that goes to both lakes.

  • Supplies and Equipment Required: Will need plenty of layers of clothing and rain gear, cause you just don't know this time of year. It is possible there will be some snow on the trail. If it looks like heavy snow on the trail or weather forcast changes we will reschedule for a sunny fall day.

Trip Report

Conditions change quickly in the mountains. After months of record breaking heat, drought and smoke, a cold, wet front moved in two days before our hike. We planned for a two lake hike with Autumn foliage, and ended up hiking in half a foot of snow. Fortunetly, the sky was clear and blue, the temperature mild, and several hunters and hikers had already broken the trail; making it quite easy for us to hike in our boots. We didn't make it to the Berley lakes, but had a simply wonderful day snow hiking along the PCT and Santiam Lake trail; enjoying views of Three Fingered Jack, Mt. Washington, North and Middle Sisters and Broken Top, blanketed in first of the season snow. Special thanks to the adventursome Obsidian participants, who were willing to "go with the flow" for a great day on the trail.
