Description:

We will take the south loop from Ray Benson Sno Park to the west side of Big Lk. We will have lunch at the lake, on a clear day you can look across the lake to a full view of Mt. Washington. The plan is to take south loop trail for 1 mile then take the second of the connector trails to the east leg of the loop and continue ssing south. After 1 mile the road curves west and parallels road 811. We will cross over to the road and follow the roads to our lunch spot on the lake. If the sno is unbroken and deep, we may modify our route. I have been on these trails, but have not scouted the route we will be taking, so we may need to do some trail finding at the intersections. This should not be an issues, as the trails and roads are marked.

Trip Report

The ten day forecast gave hope for clear skies for our snow shoe to Big Lake. But as the day approached, a storm was moving in and we were given a 90% chance of rain. I email the group to see if people were wanting to be on the snow in what was turning out to be a rainy day. The response was a resounding Yes. It was a good decision.
Everyone showed up at our meeting place with good rain gear and great attitudes. And while there was light snow and rain on and off throughout the day, conditions were surprisingly good. There was little wind and plenty of packed down snow on the trail. As we arrived at the lake, Mount Washington could just be seen through the mist. Big Lake was beautiful. We lunch by the lake shore and a couple of people explored around the lake. I would recommend a winter trip to Big Lake rain or shine.
