Description:

Meet at the Valley River Center parking lot nearest to the pedestrian/bike bridge across the Willamette. Rick Ahrens is our expert birder guide. We'll meander around the Delta Ponds area on both sides of Goodpasture Road looking for birds and possibly other critters like nutria or otters. Plan on about 2 hours. Rain or shine unless the forecast is for a downpour all day. Binoculars are highly recommended.

Trip Report

We lucked out on the weather - 63 degrees and sunny! Rick was our naturalist guide and he shared lots of fun, fascinating facts. Did you know that: the Delta ponds are fed through one small opening (weir) by the Willamette River; water flows in only when the river cfs is 3,500 or higher. Forty-50 years ago, there were no red shouldered hawks or Anna's hummingbirds in the valley; now the Anna's like it here so much that they winter over. Shoveler ducks work in pairs to create a water vortex for easier access to food. Male and female geese make distinctively different honking sounds. The local beavers have a summer and a winter lodge in the ponds; we saw a nutria snoozing on top of one, as well as 2 others on a log. And 3 turtles on another log. And a pair of beautiful wood ducks. And several other species of ducks, geese, sparrows and other birds It was a fabulous morning! Thanks Rick!
